Gate Installation in Monroe, NC

New walk gates and driveway gates for Monroe homes and Union County acreage, sized for what actually goes through them and planned before the fence goes up.

Here's a call that comes in a lot. A family moves into a new subdivision in Monroe, puts up a fence, and a month later realizes the riding mower doesn't fit through the gate. Or the boat trailer can't get into the backyard. Or the pool gate doesn't close on its own and the HOA sends a letter.

All of those come from the same thing: the gate got treated as an afterthought. On a well-planned fence, gates get decided first, because they're the part you use every day and the part that's hardest to change later.

This page covers new gates, whether they go in with a new fence or get added to one you already have. If an existing gate is sagging, dragging or won't latch, see fence and gate repair instead.

The gate checklist

Before the estimate, think through these:

  1. What goes through it? People, a dog, trash cans, a push mower, a riding mower, a trailer, a boat, a camper, a truck.
  2. Where does it make sense? The path from the driveway, the shed, the back door and the street.
  3. Which way does it swing? In or out, and what's in the way when it's open.
  4. Does it need to lock? For kids, a pool or storage.
  5. Does it need to close by itself? For a dog or a pool, yes.
  6. What will the HOA allow? Style, height, color and placement often apply to gates too.

Bring those answers to the on-site visit and the plan comes together fast.

Walk gates

The walk gate is the one you'll use most. A standard width works for people and trash cans, but if a mower or wheelbarrow comes through regularly, go wider. A wider single gate or a pair of gates beats squeezing through every week.

Good walk gate details:

  • A heavier post on the hinge side, set deep in concrete
  • Hinges sized for the gate's weight
  • A latch you can open from both sides, or a lockable one if you prefer
  • Self-closing hinges if a dog is in the yard

On a wood privacy fence, a walk gate needs a diagonal brace or a steel frame kit to stay square. Wood gates are heavy, and humid Union County summers make them swell and shrink.

Double drive gates

A lot of Monroe yards need a way to get a vehicle into the back: a trailer, a boat, a camper, a work truck or equipment for a future pool or shed. Double drive gates split the opening into two leaves that meet in the middle, so each half is lighter and swings in a shorter arc.

Things that matter on drive gates:

  • Width. Measure the widest vehicle and leave room to turn in from the driveway. Many people regret going too narrow.
  • A center drop rod. A rod that drops into a sleeve or hole in the ground holds the inactive leaf in place.
  • Swing room. The leaves need clear space. On a sloped lot, the gate may hit the ground before it opens fully.
  • Heavier posts. Drive gate posts carry a lot of weight on a long lever. They need to be bigger and deeper than line posts.

If the drive slopes up into the yard or there's no room to swing, a slide gate that rolls along the fence line is another option.

Pool gates

If the fence is a pool barrier, the gate is the part that gets checked most closely. Pool rules commonly call for gates that are self-closing and self-latching, open away from the pool, and keep the latch high enough that small kids can't reach it. Requirements vary, so check local rules and your HOA before ordering anything. Aluminum fencing is a common choice around pools, with gate hardware made for the job.

Gates on acreage

Out in rural Union County, around Unionville, Marshville and Wingate, gates are part of how the land gets worked. Tube gates, wood gates and wide double gates for tractors and stock trailers are common. A long farm gate puts serious load on its post, so the post should be heavy and braced back to the fence line. See farm and ranch fencing for the fence that goes with it.

Automatic openers make sense on long driveways and acreage gates that get used every day. They can run off a power line from the house or a solar panel. Ask how the opener stops and reverses if something is in the way, and how to open it manually when the power is out. If you might automate later, say so now so the posts and frame are sized for it.

What a gate costs

Gates are priced separately from the fence. Width, material, single or double, post size, hardware and any opener all move the number. Adding a gate to an existing fence also includes cutting in the opening and setting new gate posts. The fence installation cost guide explains how gates fit into a full quote. Your actual price comes from a free on-site visit and written quote.

HOA and permits

In most Monroe subdivisions, the HOA wants to see the gate on the fence drawing, including its width and style. A wide drive gate facing the street may draw extra questions. Check the covenants, include the gate in your application, and wait for written approval. The contractor provides the quote and drawing, checks permit needs and has NC811 mark utilities before digging. This applies in Monroe and nearby Indian Trail, Stallings and Wesley Chapel too.

Questions people ask

How wide should my backyard gate be?

Wide enough for the biggest thing you'll move through it, plus a little room. A standard walk gate fits people and trash cans. A riding mower, trailer or boat needs a wider single gate or a double drive gate.

Can a gate be added to my existing fence?

Yes. An opening is cut, heavier gate posts are set in concrete, and the gate is hung to match the fence. If the HOA requires approval for changes, get it first.

Do I need a special gate for a pool?

Pool barrier rules commonly require self-closing, self-latching gates that open away from the pool. Requirements vary, so check local rules and your HOA. The installer should plan hardware to match what applies.

My gate sags. Is that this page?

No. Sagging, dragging and latch problems on an existing gate are repairs. See the fence and gate repair page, where resetting posts and rehanging gates are covered.
